With summer almost here, there’s never been a better time to start planning a few exciting events the whole family will love. Luckily, there’s no shortage of great options around Indianapolis for families looking to learn, play, and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. Below we’ve listed a few of our favorite family friendly activities and events around town this summer:
Indianapolis is packed to the gills with some great waterparks—both indoor and outdoor. Some of the best include the Monon Community Center indoor pool, Indy Island Aquatic Center, and the Goldfish Swim School.
If you have kids that like getting dirty, this is your event. It’s just what it sounds like: a huge mud pit for kids to play in, full of 20 tons of topsoil and 20,000 gallons of water. The event is held at Cyntheanne Park in Fishers on July 8th from 11am – 1pm. We don’t recommend wearing your Sunday best.
Friday, July 14th (11am – 2pm) is the annual Ice Cream Social on the Circle, hosted by the American Dairy Association. There’ll be lots of fun activities for kids, local celebrities, music—and of course huge ice cream sundaes!
Did you know that children 12 and under get into the Brickyard 400 for free? The race, held on July 23rd, is a great family activity and one of the best ways to see the iconic Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Be sure to bring sunblock!
If you have children interested in aviation, you’ll definitely want to attend the Fly-In & Air Race, held August 5th (7:30am – 2pm) at the Indy Exec Airport in Zionsville. There’ll be fly-bys in vintage airplanes, helicopters, raffles, food, and lots of activities for kids—and the event is free.
Everybody loves the Indiana State Fair! This year’s fair goes from August 4th to August 20th, and is sure to be a great time for the whole family. Eat elephant ears and corn dogs, browse local art, listen to music, learn more about farming and agriculture, and don’t forget to try and win a few prizes at the midway.
We’re lucky to live in a state with so many great parks. From creek stomping to biking to swimming, there’s always something fun to do in the great outdoors. Some of the best parks to check out around the state include Brown County State Park, Dunes State Park, Turkey Run State Park, and Potato Creek State Park.
It’s probably no surprise that our favorite week every year is National Indoor Plant Week. To help celebrate, we’ll be giving out free potted plants on Monument Circle over lunch one day in September. Stay tuned to our blog and social media pages for more information as we get closer to the date!
With all the fun stuff to do around Indy, this is going to be a great summer for families on the move. Be sure to take advantage of all the opportunities—and remember that activities are always more fun outside!
